What Are the 500 Most Useful Verbs in English with 4 Forms?

Must know 500 verbs with 4 forms and easy pattern

What are 500 Most Useful  Verbs in English?

Verbs are the heartbeat of every sentence. They express actions (play), states (feel), and events (happen). Without verbs, language wouldn't flow,  it's as simple as that.
In this post, you will learn a complete list of verbs in their Four Forms. Whether you are preparing for competitive exams, spoken English or improving your English, this verb list will boost your confidence and fluency.

How Many Types of Verbs Are There?

There are two main types of verbs in English based on how we change them in the past tense:

1. Regular Verbs:

These verbs are easy, just 'ed' is added at the end of the verb to make the past tense and past participle.
Examples:
Play - played - played  - playing
These verbs follow the rules, so they are called regular verbs.

2. Irregular Verbs:

These verbs are a bit tricky. They don’t follow the 'ed' rule. The past and past participle forms change in different ways. Irregular verbs must be memorized, there is no choice.
Examples:
Speak - spoke - spoken - speaking
These verbs break the rules, so we call them irregular.

Friends, learning irregular verbs can be confusing because they don’t follow the usual '...ed' pattern. To help you remember them better, I have sorted them into 13 categories based on their patterns in their four forms. This way, you don’t need to memorize each verb randomly  you will understand how they change and learn them faster. These are labelled as group.

VERB INDEX:

1) Regular Verbs: 01 to 279 Verbs

2) Irregular Verbs;
Group 1: All three forms are the same
These verbs stay exactly the same in base, past, and past participle.
Example: put – put – put / cut – cut – cut

Group 2: Past and past participle are the same – ending in ...t or ...d
Only the base form is different; the other two end in ...t or ...d.
Example: send – sent – sent

Group 3: Past and past participle are the same – ending in ...ght
The base form is different, but the past and past participle both end in ...ght.
Example: catch - caught - caught

Example: blow - grow – grew - grown

Group 5: Base ends in ...ake - Past ends in ...ook - Past participle ends in ...aken

Group 6: i - a - u pattern
These verbs change vowels like i - a - u.
Example: begin – began – begun / sing – sang – sung

Group 7: Special single verb group (Run – Ran – Run)
Only 'run' follows this unique pattern.
Example: run – ran – run

Group 8: i - o - en pattern
These verbs follow i - o - en changes in vowels.
Example: write – wrote – written / ride – rode – ridden

Group 9: i - o - o pattern
These change from i to o, and the past and past participle are the same.
Example: give – gave – given / drive – drove – driven

Group 11: Vowel shift with spelling change
These verbs change vowels in different ways and also change spelling.
Example: see – saw – seen / fly – flew – flown / fall – fell – fallen

Group 12: ow - ew - own
These verbs follow a consistent vowel change: ow - ew - own.
Example: draw - drew - drawn / withdraw - withdrew - withdrawn

Group 13: Mixed/Irregular Patterns
These don’t fit any single pattern. You will need to memorize them individually.
