Uses of Verb 'Have - has'

Friends, I am sure that once you master the most versatile (be adapted to many different functions)/magical word in English i. e. 'HAVE'. It has different uses, depending on context. I am damn sure that it will be very easy for you to understand English and use it correctly in grammar without making any mistakes.

What are the uses of 'Have?'
It is used as a helping verb, a main verb, and a modal auxiliary verb.

Where to use 'have' and 'has' with a person and number?:

How many types of 'have' are there in English?
For clear understanding, it is elaborated in three as follows:
1) Helping Verb
2) Main Verb
3) Modal Auxiliary Verb

Let's learn!
1) As a Helping Verb:
Have or Has is used with the Past Participle (V3)  to form a perfect tense.

Examples:
i) Present Perfect - Virat has played cricket.
ii) Past Perfect - Virat had played cricket.
iii) Future Perfect - Virat will have played cricket.
iv) Present Perfect Continuous - Virat has been playing cricket.
v) Past Perfect Continuous - Virat had been playing cricket.
vi) Future Perfect Continuous - Virat will have been playing cricket.
Note: After will be there must be have (will have) not has.

2) Main Verb:
There are 4 types of verb:

Main verb (V1)

Past tense (V2)

Past participle (V3)

Present Participle (V4)

Their meaning as per context is as follows.
i) Possession (Ownership)

Have/has is used to show owning things (ownership)or possessions of something

Structure: Subject + have/has + object

  • I have a blog.
  • Virat has a bat.
  • They have a mansion (a large big country-side big bungalow).

ii) Relationships

It Shows family or social relationships with someone.

  • I have two sisters and no brother.
  • He has a lot of friends.
  • You have a good English teacher.

iii) Diseases or Conditions

Used to describe health status.

  • He has a hey fever.
  • She had a headache.
  • Do you have any allergies?

iv) Experiences or Events

Used to describe events or experiences.

  • I had a great time at the party.
  • They had an argument yesterday.
  • Virat has a meeting at 10 AM at Wankhede stadium.

v) With Meals

Used to talk about eating or drinking.

  • I had breakfast at 9.00a.m.
  • Let's have dinner together.
  • She has tea every evening.

vi) Causative Use (Have something done)

To indicate someone arranges for someone else to do something.

  • I had my car washed yesterday.
  • She is having her hair cut.
  • We will have the documents prepared.
